Cassie Sharpe

Cassie Sharpe’s journey to becoming an Olympic medalist was rooted in her upbringing in the rugged landscapes of Vancouver Island. Raised skiing Mount Washington, Cassie and her brothers, Darcy and Doug, honed their skiing and snowboarding skills, pushing each other to excel.

Despite her impressive accolades, Cassie remains humble and attributes her success to hard work, perseverance, and the unwavering support of her team.

Facing numerous challenges, including multiple injuries, Cassie’s dedication to her sport never wavered.

Trennon Paynter, Cassie’s half-pipe coach, describes her as a game-changer in her sport, praising her technical skills, amplitude, and down-to-earth attitude.

It’s a story of triumph, tenacity, and the extraordinary strength found at the crossroads of athleticism and motherhood.

Motherhood and Competitive Athlete, not the norm.

This series ventures into uncharted territory by exploring the intersecting identity of a woman who is both a world-class competitor and a new mother. It shatters the conventional narrative by showcasing the complexities of balancing training, competitions, and the Olympic qualifying process alongside societal expectations placed on mothers.

Mothers are often expected to be the primary caregivers, emotionally available at all times, and responsible for managing the household, all while embodying selflessness and sacrifice. These expectations create added pressure for women athletes, who must also navigate the physical demands of their sport and the emotional challenges of ‘mom guilt.’ The tension between personal ambition and caregiving often forces difficult choices—how does one pursue greatness while still meeting the unrelenting expectations of motherhood?

Unlike men, who typically encounter fewer obstacles when balancing careers with parenthood, women face more rigid societal standards and a disproportionate burden in parenting. Biological factors, career timing, and insufficient support systems only amplify the challenges for mothers attempting to return to elite sports.

This series not only highlights the physical and emotional resilience required to compete at the highest level but also addresses the societal expectations and stereotypes that women face. Cassie’s journey becomes a poignant exploration of what it means to reject the narrative that motherhood must come at the expense of personal goals. As she trains and competes in an extreme sport, Cassie battles the ever-present ‘mom guilt,’ questioning whether her choices could impact her ability to care for her daughter Louellea.

Through Cassie’s experience, this series redefines what it means to be both a mother and an athlete, showing that strength, ambition, and caregiving can coexist on her own terms.

Is this pursuit selfish?

Is this sport too dangerous?

Will I be able to compete?

What if I get injured?

Who will care for Lou?

“She should focus on her family.”

“You Can’t do both well!”

“What about your child’s well-being?…”

What’s she trying to prove?

“She shouldn’t be doing extreme sports.”

Can she meet the dual demands of parenting and athletic excellence, or will society’s expectations prove too heavy a burden to bear?
